Sudah kita maklumi bersama bahwa bilangan adalah dasar dari matematika. Dengan demikian penguasaan materi ini harus benar-benar mantap surantap. Kalau tidak pasti peserta didik akan mengalami kesulitan untuk penguasan materi selanjutnya. Salah satu kompetensi yang harus dukuasai oleh peserta didik adalah Operasi Hitung Bilangan Bulat dan Pecahan.

Untuk melatih skil operasi hitung bilangan bulat dan pecahan ada beberapa metode yang dapat kita terapkan, diantaranya adalah drill dan game. Drill adalah melatih penguasaan skill dengan memberikan latihan soal sebanyak-banyaknya. Kelebihan metode ini adalah peserta didik mendapatkan porsi latihan yang sangat banyak, karena metode ini efisien terhadap waktu. Kekurangannya metode ini kadang membosankan. Metode game adalah metode melatih skil dengan permainan. Kelebihan metode ini adalah menyenangkan, kekurangannya kurang efisien terhadap waktu.

1. Drill

Untuk menerapkan metode ini, guru dituntut untu membuat soal sebanyak-banyaknya. Tapi jangan khawatir! Untuk kompetensi operasi hitung bilangan bulat dan pecahan, terdapat sebuah buku (tepatnya buku kerja) yang dapat Anda unduh gratis. Buku tersebut berbahasa Inggris, tapi jangan alergi dulu yang bahasa Inggrisnya pas-pasan, di buku ini tidak banyak kalimat yang perlu kita pahami, yang banyak adalah sekumpulan soal yang sudah diatur secara rapi menurut kompetensi. SNMPTN (Seleksi Nasional Masuk Perguruan Tinggi Negeri) 2009 sudah dekat, yaitu akan dilaksanakan pada tanggal 1, 2, dan 4 Juli 2009. Adapun jenis tesnya adalah sebagai berikut:

1. Tes Potensi Akademik (TPA) (1 juli 2009).
2. Tes Bidang Studi Prediktif (TBSP), yang terdiri dari:
a. Tes Bidang Studi Dasar terdiri atas mata ujian Matematika Dasar, Bahasa Indonesia, dan Bahasa Inggris (1 Juli 2009).
b. Tes Bidang Studi IPA terdiri atas mata ujian Matematika, Biologi, Kimia, dan Fisika (2 Juli 2009).
